Can't Bear to Run by Lynn Red

I really liked Dax, he was caring and compassionate, "the tips of his curls brushed against the side of my face. “Not now,” he said. “She needs to recover, she’s fragile, and I have to protect her.” Raine that girl cracked me up, “do I get a gun ?” I asked. “I mean, if I’m gonna be your sheriff I should probably pack.” There's obviously more to this story and the cliffhanger wasn't really a cliffhanger and I was pleased with that.
